Negative Aspects of Self-Awareness
There are some negative aspects of self-awareness.
Fromm (1968) writes, "the price man pays for consciousness is insecurity"
(p. 62). Along with the ability to control one's own actions comes
the insecurity of never knowing if one's actions will result in failure.
Loneliness can occur; with self-awareness also comes awareness of the separation
from other. Fromm (1968) goes on to say that humans need "to have a
frame of orientation which permits [us] to organize a consistent picture
of the world as a condition for consistent action" in order to counteract
the insecurity and loneliness (p. 63). Without this we will tend to
go insane. This frame of orientation is called a paradigm.
